The scientific, military, and commercial interests in international and domestic space programs are examined throughout the history of space flight. The needs of commercial space endeavors and methods of expanding space technology into manufacturing are contrasted to the importance of scientific exploration, and the requirements of military space operations. The justification, development, and costs of scientific exploration programs, defense-related projects, and commercial endeavors are used to study the evolution of space missions and the development of future programs.

The requirements related to scientific, defense and commercial missions will be used to outline the U.S. and foreign space programs. The forces behind the operations in space are emphasized to show the evolutionary development of space programs and projects. Specific spacecraft projects are examined to show the stages of development and the distinct purposes of the programs. Economic trends in the countries supporting the various space programs are evaluated for the relative success of the project and the development of similar programs.

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

1. Assess the current and emerging technologies in space operations for use in commercial markets, both space-borne and Earth-borne.

2. Examine the commercial forces in spacecraft and satellite operations and the increasing internationalization of space activities.

3. Debate economic indices for advancing technology on spacecraft platforms.

4. Analyze military applications of spacecraft in strategic and defensive terms.

5. Evaluate the role of the military in space operations and hardware.

6. Analyze the systematic approach for planning spaceflight missions.

7. Analyze real and potential social and scientific contributions of space programs.

8. Determine the possibilities offuture space programs based on global needs and economic forces.

Upon course completion, students will be able to:

9. Demonstrate appropriate selection and application of a research method and statistical analysis (where required), specific to the course subject matter (effective July 1, 2013).

Located on the Daytona Beach Campus, the Jack R. Hunt Library is the primary library for all students of the Worldwide Campus. The Chief Academic Officer strongly recommends that every faculty member, where appropriate, require all students in his or her classes to access the Hunt Library or a comparable college-level local library for research. The results of this research can be used for class projects such as research papers, group discussion, or individual presentations. Students should feel comfortable with using the resources of the library.
