American Literature
This course is a survey of intellectual backgrounds, major works and literary trends in American literature. Course content varies by instructor and is listed in the Schedule of Courses.

This course introduces the student to the most significant works of the American creative imagination, works from this cultural heritage which continues to affect the lives and thoughts of contemporary Americans.

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

1. Discuss and write about their broad understanding of American national characteristics, exploring the issues of multiplicity and unity as they are represented in literature.

2. Discuss and write about American cultural ideologies and how they affect and are affected by historical events and literary productions.

3. Discuss and write about how ideas and themes in American literary works can shape the ideas and themes of international productions.

4. Discuss and write about strategies authors employ to convey ideas and themes, how these ideas and themes address concerns within their own eras, and how these ideas and themes relate to concerns of the present-day reader.

5. Do research that leads to a formal written analysis of one or more American literary works, documented in correct APA format.

Located on the Daytona Beach Campus, the Jack R. Hunt Library is the primary library for all students of the Worldwide Campus. The Chief Academic Officer strongly recommends that every faculty member, where appropriate, require all students in his or her classes to access the Hunt Library or a comparable college-level local library for research. The results of this research can be used for class projects such as research papers, group discussion, or individual presentations. Students should feel comfortable with using the resources of the library.
