Assessing and Managing Project Risk
More difficult economic conditions, increasing competition, and exponentially expanding technology create greater uncertainty and risk in projects. With these complex challenges come complex opportunities. Uncertainty and associated risks and opportunities become more complex as project span organizational, national, and cultural bounds. In this course the student will investigate the sources or risk, the pervasiveness of risk, analysis of risk, and the planning and control of risk events.

The goal of this course is to develop in the students an understanding of and a proficiency in the art and science of managing risk in projects.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of Project Risk Management as presented in Chapter Eleven of the Project Management Institute’s Guide to the project Management body of Knowledge. (APPLICATION)

2. Demonstrate knowledge of commonly used quantitative decision methods, particularly, decision tables, decision trees, risk curves, CPM and PERT scheduling, AHP and MFEP, and Monte Carlo simulations. (APPLICATION)

3. Examine and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of project risk planning methodologies. (EVALUATION)

4. Identify, categorize, analyze and evaluate project risks. (EVALUATION)

5. Assess project risks and risk events utilizing qualitative and quantitative analysis and employ probability and impact measures to evaluate risks to the project. (EVALUATION)

6. Apply simulation methodologies in assessing schedule, budget, and quality risks. (APPLICATION)

7. Evaluate various project metrics and use of reserves as tools for managing risk in projects. (EVALUATION)

8. Integrate change management and control, quality management, project progress metrics, and risk plan monitoring and updating into a cogent agency for project risk management (SYNTHESIS)

9. Evaluate the effects of continuous plan validation, project reviews and audits, and thoroughness of archiving on the success of the current project and future projects. (EVALUATION)

10. Integrate knowledge of E. Goldratt’s theory of constraints with more tradition project management as exemplified in critical path related methodologies. (SYNTHESIS)

11. Utilize access to professional journals and periodical to enhance knowledge and maintain currency. (APPLICATION)

12. Conduct a thorough analysis of risks and risk management in a complex, failed project. (ANALYSIS)

13. Utilize current project management software to develop and execute planning, control and closure of technical projects (actual or simulated) in the students’ areas of technical expertise and assess its value in managing projects. (EVALUATION)

14. Evaluate the importance of leadership skills in managing projects and differentiate leadership from management, (evaluation) and identify different leadership styles appropriate to differing project management situations. (ANALYSIS)

Located on the Daytona Beach Campus, the Jack R. Hunt Library is the primary library for all students of the Worldwide Campus. The Chief Academic Officer strongly recommends that every faculty member, where appropriate, require all students in his or her classes to access the Hunt Library or a comparable college-level local library for research. The results of this research can be used for class projects such as research papers, group discussion, or individual presentations.
