Intelligence Collection and Analysis
In this course, the student will be given the opportunity to gain practical experience in the intelligence functions of analysis, writing, and briefing. The student will be expected to demonstrate an "intelligence-oriented mind" and ability to work under time pressure. The student will become familiar with analytical methodologies and writing styles that make complex world events explicable to military decision makers and senior policy makers.

This course is required for students pursuing a minor or certificate in Security and Intelligence. Given its practical approach, the course is an excellent follow-on to SCTY 315, Studies in Intelligence I, where the student studied the history and uses of strategic intelligence during and after the Second World War. In addition to practical skills, this course should give the student an appreciation of the "intelligence oriented mind," and experience with such questions as what the government policy maker, unit commander or corporate decision maker needs, what are the implications for the United States in major breaking developments, what are the indicators of deception, and why it is necessary to constantly examine counter-intuitive possibilities, as well as one’s basic analytical assumptions.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Recognize what intelligence is and the vital role of intelligence to the national security of a country and its military and political policies.

2. Describe the categories of intelligence and assess the various methods utilized for the collection of intelligence.

3. Assess the analytical approaches and apply analytical models in the intelligence process.4. Acquire knowledge of a country by conducting a country profile that includes its geography, history, culture, economy, society, military and politics, and to examine the interconnections between all these factors.

5. Demonstrate the evaluation of intelligence through the development of a written intelligence report and intelligence power point presentation.

Upon course completion, students will be able to:

Located on the Daytona Beach Campus, the Jack R. Hunt Library is the primary library for all students of the Worldwide Campus. The Chief Academic Officer strongly recommends that every faculty member, where appropriate, require all students in his or her classes to access the Hunt Library or a comparable college-level local library for research. The results of this research can be used for class projects such as research papers, group discussion, or individual presentations. Students should feel comfortable with using the resources of the library.
