Master's Assistantships

Master's assistantships are academic appointments reserved for qualified graduate students. These positions may involve teaching, research, or administrative duties under the supervision of faculty or staff. 

Types of Assistantships 

  • Master's Teaching Assistant: ordinarily entails teaching, grading, tutoring, proctoring, and leading labs. 
  • Master's Research Assistant: ordinarily entails collecting, organizing, and analyzing data, conducting experiments, collaborating with faculty with publications, and other research activities. 
  • Master's Administrative Assistant: ordinarily entails clerical, technical, and instructional support.

Eligibility

  • To be eligible for an assistantship, a student must have full graduate status in a Master’s degree program, must have maintained a CGPA of 3.00 out of a possible 4.00, or above, through the end of the semester (graduate or undergraduate) preceding the appointment, and must demonstrate adequate communication and technical skills.

Each department posts available assistantships. Incoming students should contact departments directly for availability. 

Appointment Details

Full assistantships include a stipend set by the University and a tuition waiver. Graduate assistants are expected to devote a set number of hours weekly (typically 20 hours for full appointments). Partial assistantships may provide either tuition and stipend, with hours determined by the department. 

Additional Requirements 

  • Must be registered for at least six graduate credits during any semester of appointment (summer registration encouraged but not required). 
  • Students may accept other University employment, but total work hours are limited to 25 per week (20 for international students), including the assistantship.
