Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps

Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) enhances a student’s education by providing leadership and management training together with practical, hands-on experiences. The program is open to men and women from the freshman year through the senior year, as well as eligible graduate students, and offers a pathway to commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

Students may begin the program with no military service obligation. The curriculum is designed to be challenging, educational and flexible so that students can meet academic, professional and personal goals while remaining college students first.

Training includes leadership development, problem solving, decision making, tactics, physical training, map reading, land navigation, rappelling, rifle marksmanship, patrolling, drill and ceremony, military history, ethics and military law.

Students who complete the four-year program earn 18 credit hours in Military Science. All required uniforms and equipment are issued at no cost to contracted cadets.

Reserve Officer Training programs are subject to the control of the sponsoring service branch and operate under U.S. Army regulations.

Program Structure

Basic Military Science (MILS 101, MILS 102 and MILS 201, MILS 202)

Offered during the freshman and sophomore years and includes:

  • Military organization, equipment and weapons
  • Map reading and land navigation
  • Communications and leadership fundamentals
  • Rank structure and threat analysis
  • Physical training
  • Classroom instruction with a mandatory leadership laboratory

Students may enroll with no obligation to the Army.
Completion of the Basic Course, Basic Camp, or an approved equivalent is required before entering the Advanced Course.

Advanced Military Science (MILS 301, MILS 302 and MILS 401, MILS 402)

Normally taken during the junior and senior years (or final two years of a graduate program) and focuses on:

  • Small-unit tactics
  • Staff procedures and military training management
  • Decision making and leadership
  • Military justice and ethics
  • Military writing and problem analysis

This phase requires successful completion of Advanced Camp (Cadet Leadership Course) at Fort Knox, KY, a summer assessment of officer leadership and tactical proficiency and a prerequisite for commissioning.

Basic Camp

A summer training program at Fort Knox for students who:

  • Did not complete the Basic Course, and
  • Have two academic years remaining

Completion qualifies the student to enter the Advanced Course and provides academic credit and approximately $800 in pay.

Physical Training

Contracted cadets participate in organized physical training as part of the course grade.

Scholarships and Financial Benefits

Contracted cadets receive:

  • Monthly subsistence stipend during the academic year
  • Book allowance each semester
  • Eligibility for two-, three- or four-year Army ROTC scholarships covering full tuition and fees (flight training excluded)

University-funded incentives may be available for national scholarship recipients, subject to campus financial aid policies.

Admission Requirements

Basic Course

  • Enrollment in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program
  • Minimum age 17
  • U.S. citizenship
  • Full-time student status

Advanced Course / Contracting

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Completion of Basic Course or approved equivalent
  • Successful Army medical qualification
  • Selection by the Professor of Military Science
  • Agreement to accept a commission and serve on Active Duty, National Guard or Army Reserve
  • Minimum GPA and ROTC performance standards
  • Full-time enrollment

Stipend Description

  • $420/month and $1,200/year for books.

GPA / Academic Standards

  • Minimum 2.5 GPA for scholarship eligibility
  • 2.00 overall CGPA and 3.00 ROTC GPA to remain in the Advanced Course.
