Minor Courses of Study
Minor courses of study are academic programs designed to satisfy students’ personal interests and to meet their professional needs. Students explore, in some depth, the offerings in a field of study. A minor course of study provides the student with significant experience in a discipline organized around skills, methodology, and subject matter. Minor courses of study are posted on the academic transcript at the time of completion of the baccalaureate degree. Students are prohibited from declaring a minor for an associate degree.
To gain the greatest value from their academic experiences, students are encouraged to select minors that complement their degree program and/or other minors they are pursuing. Designed to include a minimum number of required courses, minors provide students, whenever possible, with flexibility in fulfilling program requirements.
A minor program does not provide the depth of knowledge and experience that a major does. All minors consist of 15-24 hours of coherent academic coursework under the following guidelines:
- At least six hours must be fulfilled at the upper level.
- Six hours of coursework applied to a minor must be completed at Embry-Riddle.
- At least three of those hours completed in residence must be at the upper level.
- No more than two substitutions (6 credits) are permitted in any minor. The Program Chair/Coordinator offering the minor must approve the substitutions.
- A minor may not be applied toward more than one baccalaureate degree.
- Students are prohibited from declaring a minor for an associate degree.
- When pursuing multiple minors, if the same course is required in more than one minor, the course may apply to all without requiring additional hours.
- Students must earn a 2.0 GPA or higher in the minor to complete that program of study successfully.
- Students become subject to the requirements of the minor as stated in the catalog in effect at the time the minor is declared.
- Some minor restrictions apply when pursuing particular degree programs or areas of concentration.
- A minor must be in a discipline outside of the student’s major field of study.
- Daytona Beach and Prescott students are encouraged to declare a minor by the beginning of their senior year.
- Worldwide & Online students must declare their intention to seek a minor(s) as early as possible, preferably at the time of admission.
- Worldwide & Online students may declare their intention to seek a minor later in their academic career, but not after the date on which their application for graduation is received by the Office of the Registrar.
- Students in the Daytona Beach Aerospace Engineering department must complete at least six credit hours of coursework applied to the minor that are not specifically required in the student’s degree program
