NSCI 101 Introduction to Naval Science 2 Credits (2,0)
General introduction to the USN and USMC that emphasizes organizational structure, warfare components and assigned roles/missions of the USN/USMC. Covers all aspects of Naval Service from its relative position within the DoD to the specific warfare community/career paths and includes basic elements of leadership and USN and USMC Core Values. Required for all midshipmen.
NSCI 102 Sea Power and Maritime Affairs 3 Credits (3,0)
Introduction to the principles, practices, lines of command and control, and nature of sea power for the U.S. Armed Forces in world history. Required for all midshipmen.
NSCI 201 Leadership and Management 3 Credits (3,0)
Management theory and principles, with a focus on the officer as an organizational decision-maker. Includes interpersonal skills, behavior, and group dynamics. Required for all midshipmen.
NSCI 202 Navigation 3 Credits
In-depth theory, principles, procedures, and application of plotting, piloting, and electronic navigation, as well as an introduction to maneuvering boards. Students learn piloting techniques, the use of charts, the use of visual and electronic aids, and the theory of operation of both magnetic and gyrocompasses. Required for all Navy-option midshipmen.
NSCI 202L Navigation Laboratory 1 Credit (0,1)
Laboratory work in piloting and celestial navigation. Complements NSC 202. Required for all Navy-option midshipmen.
NSCI 301 Naval Ship Systems I (Engineering) 3 Credits (3,0)
Naval ship systems, including hydrodynamics, stability, compartmentalization, propulsion systems, and shipboard safety. Includes steam, gas turbine, and nuclear propulsion design. Required for all Navy-option midshipmen.
NSCI 302 Naval Ship Systems II (Weapons) 3 Credits (3,0)
Introduction to naval weapons systems. Focus on sensor, tracking, computation, and weapons delivery subsystems. Explosives, fusing, and naval ordnance. Required for all Navy-option midshipmen.
NSCI 310 Evolution of Warfare 3 Credits (3,0)
Survey of the art and concepts of warfare throughout history. Interrelations of political, strategic, operational, tactical, and technical levels of war. Brief introduction to modern warfare concepts and their relevance to future conflicts. Required for all Marine-option midshipmen.
NSCI 311 Fundamentals of Maneuver Warfare 3 Credits (3,0)
Introduction to maneuver warfare doctrine and its application within the U.S. Marine Corps and historical influences on modern warfare and the philosophy of maneuver warfare. Required for all Marine-option midshipmen.
NSCI 401 Naval Operations and Seamanship 3 Credits (3,0)
Continued study of relative motion, formation tactics, and ship employment. Includes introductions to naval operations and operations analysis, ship behavior and characteristics in maneuvering, applied aspects of ship handling, afloat communications, naval command and control, naval warfare areas, and joint warfare. The course is supplemented with a review/analysis of case studies involving moral/ethical/leadership issues. Required for all Navy-option midshipmen.
NSCI 401L Naval Operations and Seamanship Laboratory 1 Credit (0,1)
Laboratory work in maneuvering board vector analysis, communications, and conflict resolution. Complements NSC 401. Required for all Navy-option midshipmen.
NSCI 402 Naval Leadership and Ethics 3 Credits (3,0)
Capstone leadership course focusing on the integration of competencies and leadership qualities; ethics, accountability, communications, and military law for junior officers. Required for all midshipmen and officer candidates.
